Rail passengers on the main line between the region and London’s Liverpool Street can now sign up to show their support for a new campaign to improve services.

The Great Eastern Rail Campaign was launched yesterday by the taskforce set up by regional MPs, the New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership, and business organisations to persuade the Department for Transport and the rail industry to invest in the route.

The aim is for new, modern trains to reach Ipswich in 60 minutes from Liverpool Street and Norwich in 90.

Within hours of the campaign being launched hundreds of people had signed up as supporters – and organisers are hoping it will gather momentum during the summer and autumn.

Taskforce members Ipswich MP Ben Gummer and Norwich North MP Chloe Smith joined Chris Starkie from the New Anglia LEP at Ipswich station where a refurbished commuter train was on display and one of the first refurbished InterCity trains formed a service to London.

  • London in 90 mins is possible with todays rolling stock, most of the track is 100mph, and the loco's and stock are capable of doing London in 90 mins, with less stops, but the real problem starts from Colchester where the volume of traffic including freight increases. its all very well these MP's wanting these thing, but do you home work first, look at the overall situation

  • Harry, you talk about reasonable fares. Bristol - Weston super Mare (30mins) £4.30. Norwich - Ipswich (40mins) £11+ day returns. Tell me which is reasonable!

  • Everywhere else in Europe railways are regarded as a vital part of the economic well being of a country, here they are a political football to be kicked around and privatised! Beeching and Marples would not have got away with their wrecking spree in any other country, and the economy and the country have never recovered from it! money must be invested or the rail service will continue to be a laughing stock!

  • It's a rubbish Mickey Mouse service, and always has been! Upgrade the track and the rolling stock and start charging reasonable fares, and I might, just might consider using the train to nip down to London! Businesses in east Anglia would flourish if we had a first class railway system, but we haven't so they won't !
