The Duke of Edinburgh attended a commemoration service to pay tribute to the millions who died in the First World War.

The Duke drove himself to the vigil which was held at the St Mary Magdalene Church, in Sandringham.

As the weather remained calm and warm outside, the Duke joined other members of the public inside the picturesque church to sing hymns and listen to readings and prayers in a half hour service.

Reader Sally Stanton who led the service said: “It was a time for reflection, a service with music and silence.”

Three visitors who did not want to be named, described the service as “lovely, dignified, calm and peaceful.”
