A woman in her 70s was helped out of her car after it flipped onto its roof in Beccles this afternoon.

Residents on Peddars Lane, in Beccles, rushed to the woman's aid after hearing the crash at around 3.45pm.

Erica Ogborn, 68, said she heard a bang and went out to help together with three neighbours.

When they outside they found the car upside down with the driver still inside.

Mrs Ogborn said: 'We got her out. I know it is not the thing to do, but she wanted to get out.

She added: 'We wanted to get her out as she was sitting on the glass.'

Mrs Ogborn said the woman, who is believed to be 75 years old, was taken to Beccles Hospital with slight injuries.

'She was shaken but remarkably in good spirits, she did not want to go to hospital, said Mrs Ogborn.

It is thought she was returning home after playing bingo.

Police, fire and rescue and the ambulance service were all called to the scene. The road was closed and the car was recovered at around 5pm.

Gerry Defalco, Beccles crew commander with Suffolk Fire and Rescue, said that a red VW Polo was parked on the side of the road and that it appeared the light blue/gray Ford Ka had hit into it and flipped when travelling away from the town centre.
