Police and the coastguard were called to Lowestoft seafront this afternoon after a woman entered the water and appeared to be in trouble.
The woman, who was believed to be in her 20s, was seen jumping in to the water near to the Fisherman’s Wharf pub on the South Pier at about 2.30pm.
The police and the coastguard were alerted by a member of the public, who feared the woman was in trouble and said waves were breaking over her head.
The Lowestoft RNLI lifeboat crew were called to the station but were stood down before launching when the woman came ashore on her own.
A police spokesman said the woman was out of the water when officers arrived and was believed to be intoxicated.
The spokesman added: “Officers spoke to her and she said she just wanted to go for a swim.”
The woman has not been detained.
