A new sport has been added to the growing line up of activities taking place at this year’s Downham Games.

Now in its seventh year, the family-focussed sports event taking place on Sunday, June 10, will now include golf.

For the first time in the games’ history, the Ryston Park Golf Club will be setting up at the Memorial Playing Fields for participants to have a go and learn more about the sport.

The club has attracted a number of members and visitors from around the county and this year they hope the Downham Games will get more young people taking part in the sport.

Peter Lunt, golf professional and coach, said: “At the moment, Ryston has a lot of senior members, ladies and men, but very few young people and I am looking forward to the opportunity to meet visitors at the Games and talk to them about golf.

“We will have some promotional vouchers for the club to hand out as prizes on the day.”

Downham Games organiser Frances Rayner said: “We are always looking for fresh ideas and opportunities for our visitors and this is one that I think everyone, no matter what age will enjoy.

“It’s also a great opportunity for the club to demonstrate to the public what they have to offer and to promote themselves so it really does feel like a good opportunity all round.”

This year’s Games will commence with a warm up for the athletics competition at 10.45am, with taster sessions and the athletics event running between 11am and 1pm.

Ms Rayner believes the key to the success of Downham Games is the activities on offer which appeals to both young and old, as well as the event being mainly free to take part in.

Costs for the athletics event are priced at £1 for 16 years and under and £2 for 17 years plus.
