The first incident took place at around 10.10am on September 29 outside the Halifax in St Stephens Street.

An elderly woman went to use a cash machine when she was distracted by a man waving a piece of paper who informed her the machine was broken. He then appears to have left with the victim’s card.

A short time later a similar man approached a woman at a cash machine outside Barclays Bank in Red Lion Street. He again distracted the victim before taking her bank card, and a significant amount of cash was later withdrawn from the account.

Police are now urging the public to be vigilant when making banking transactions.

Officers want to speak to anyone who was in the area of either bank at the time and may have seen the man, or anyone who recognises the image.

People are reminded to be aware of their surroundings when using cash machines and issued the following advice:

• Do not let yourself become distracted whilst using your card, shield your PIN and keep your bag and wallet secure.

• Ensure you take your card and money when you leave the machine, and if you feel unsafe or the machine appears to have been tampered with, do not use it.

• Report any suspicious persons or devices to police.

Anyone with information is asked to contact PC Andrew Vinsen at Norfolk Constabulary on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
