Do these Norwich builders’ names ring a bell?

A piece of wood dated and signed in pencil, July 6, 1889, was found at a city hairdresser during refurbishment work - but the names are quite hard to decipher.

Dean Cooper, who runs Esquire in Ber Street, with business partner Shaun King, said: “We found the piece of wood in a little nook in the middle of refurbishment, when we exposed the old brickwork in the wall.

“It’s in such good condition probably because it’s been there all this time and has not been disturbed.

“We think it might have been a window horn. These four or five houses in a row in Ber Street all date from about that time, 1889. They would have been shops downstairs and residential quarters upstairs. It was maybe a greengrocer downstairs. Ber Street has always had a lot of history and character. I think it says, possibly,‘E Page and Charley Blyth Builders’. It might be worth trying to find out if a Blyth builders is still going.”

Mr Cooper said he would put the wood back in the nook where it was found. What do you think it says? Do the names ring a bell? Let us know. Email david.bale2@archant.co.uk
