Rotarians have helped to spread the word once more – by delivering hundreds of dictionaries to schoolchildren.

The three Lowestoft-based Rotary Clubs have again teamed up with the town's primary schools as part of ongoing efforts to help improve child literacy levels.

Every Year Three pupil at the schools have again been presented with their very own illustrated Dictionary 4 Life courtesy of the Rotary Clubs.

The scheme, which is now in its seventh year, is a three club project involving the Rotary Clubs of Lowestoft, Lowestoft South and Lowestoft East Point as well as external sponsors.

The Rotarians have combined to distribute the Usborne illustrated dictionaries to around 950 youngsters, with all the schools being visited throughout this week.

A Lowestoft Rotary Club spokesman said: 'The dictionaries are aimed at helping to improve literacy in Lowestoft. They are encyclopaedic in nature and become the property of the student.

'They carry the pupils name and an inscription and are eagerly received by the pupils.'

With thousands of primary school children receiving their very own Dictionary 4 Life over the years, the Rotary Club spokesman added: 'The clubs are grateful to a number of sponsors, who donate generously to enable this activity to continue.

'They include the PYE foundation, Roger Harrod's Karpet and Furniture Kingdom and a number of anonymous charities.

Waveney MP Peter Aldous was in attendance at one of the first presentations this week, as children at Roman Hill Primary School, in Avondale Road, proudly received their new dictionaries.

Headteacher Jackie Etteridge said: 'The children at Roman Hill Primary School love receiving the dictionaries.

'They are vibrant and interactive and support the children with their literacy skills and vocabulary development.

'We are very grateful to the Rotary Clubs for donating the dictionaries each year and to the organisations who help to fund them.'

A spokesman for the Rotary Club of Lowestoft East Point added: 'This is a great project.'
