A teenager is set to cycle 130 miles from a mid Norfolk town to a Great British landmark to raise awareness of cancer.

Vaughan Fox decided to set himself the challenge of riding between his school in Dereham to the London Eye after his great uncle David lost his battle with the disease.

The 15-year-old Northgate High School pupil plans to undertake the charity cycle in August and will be joined by his dad Matthew Fox.

He will be raising funds for Cancer Research UK.

Vaughan, who is studying for his GCSEs, said: “My family has been affected by cancer recently so I thought I would do something to help. I enjoy cycling and spend a fair bit of time on my bike so I thought it would be a good idea to go out on a ride and raise money for cancer research at the same time.”

The teenager said the fundraiser was going to be a “huge task”.

“One hundred and 30 miles is a long way to cycle,” he said. “My family has been really supportive, especially my mum as it was her uncle who died from cancer.”

Vaughan and his dad plan to set out on the challenge at about 6am on August 20.

His mum Bronwen Thomas said she “couldn’t be prouder” of her son.

The mother-of-three, who has an older son Thomas, 18, and younger daughter Caitlin, 14, said: “It’s
typical Vaughan, he is very forward- thinking and always likes to
contribute and make a difference.

“His great uncle David died from cancer three years ago and he is particularly aware of how devastating cancer can be, and he is completely aware of how important it is to raise money.

“He is a very get-up-and-go kid, I couldn’t be prouder of him. It’s very typical of Vaughan to get stuck in and do something.”
