The dementia lodge at Halsey House, a Royal British Legion home on Norwich Road, held its first ever open day about training and support in relation to the neurological disease today.

It was put on as part of national Dementia Awareness Week.

Professionals from charities, including Alzheimer’s Society and Age UK, as well as the NHS were at the event.

Laura Lodge, manager of the 16-room dementia lodge called the Danbury, said: “The problem of dementia is growing. We need more people helping sufferers. There are a lot of elderly people in Norfolk because people come to Norfolk to retire.

“Dementia is so hard for relatives and loved ones. It is frightening and sad and they need support.”

Katherine Mason, from the Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust’s dementia intensive support team, said more open events about the condition needed to be held to promote services and education.
