A new direct bus service between Beccles and the James Paget University Hospital at Gorleston has been launched today.
It is being operated by Anglian Bus and will run hourly to the hospital via Lowestoft.
The new service is a long-held ambition of Waveney councillor Graham Elliott and his wife, town councillor Nicky Elliott.
The project has also been championed by the East Suffolk Travellers Association (ESTA), the public transport campaign group.
Graham Smith, commercial manager of Anglian Bus said, “We received a number of requests from members of the public, MPs, ESTA and also feedback from our drivers with regards to a direct service from Beccles to James Paget Hospital.
“We’ve taken these comments on board and are delighted to revise our existing Service 60 to provide an hourly service to/from the hospital.”
Trevor Garrod, chairman of ESTA said: “The problems of getting to the James Paget University Hospital by bus from several parts of the Waveney area have often been raised by ESTA members over the last decade. We welcome this new initiative - which will also open other journey possibilities, including the options of changing at the hospital for local buses to other parts of Great Yarmouth and Gorleston.”
Nicky Elliott, Green Party councillor on Beccles Town Council said, “We are delighted to see this direct service being introduced. It will provide a real alternative to the private car for many Beccles people when attending routine appointments or visiting family at the hospital.
”We are grateful that Anglian Bus has heard our appeals for this service which emanated from scores of people across the town. This is primarily a commercial service and we are determined to help it thrive now that the difficult job of getting it started has been done. With this in mind we will be delivering a timetable for the service to every house in Beccles during March.”
Buses start at Tesco in Newgate, Beccles, and leave at five minutes past the hour.
The full timetable is available at Beccles Library and at www.anglianbus.co.uk
