Emergency services at the scene of a crash on the B1150 at Horstead.

The death toll on Norfolk’s roads increased to six in seven days after another life was claimed in a head-on crash yesterday.

The latest fatality occurred after two cars were involved in an accident on the B1150 Norwich Road at Horstead.

Two other people were also hurt, with a man airlifted to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge suffering multiple injuries. The second person was taken to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and was described as having minor injuries.

An East of England Ambulance Service (EEAS) spokesman said: “Despite the best efforts of all emergency crews a person sadly died at the scene and our thoughts are with all those affected by this incident.

“One patient remains in a critical condition and has been airlifted to Addenbrooke’s with traumatic injuries to their head, pelvis and femur.

“A third casualty was conveyed by land ambulance to Norfolk and Norwich and their condition is not serious.”

EEAS sent two ambulances, two paramedic officers and a rapid response vehicle to the scene, while an East Anglian Air Ambulance based at Norwich Airport also attended.

The road crash happened on the B1150 Norwich Road, south of the junction with Green Lane.

It is a stretch of road which changes from a 30mph speed limit to a 60mph limit as vehicles leave Horstead, near Coltishall, in the direction of Norwich.

Horstead residents Bernard and Dorothy Foster said yesterday’s crash was the latest on the road.

The retired couple, who established The Aristocrat Restaurant in Cromer, said the road was busy and they often had trouble leaving their house into Norwich Road due to traffic and because some motorists travelled at high speed.

Mr Foster, 76, said: “It’s not the first accident on the road. We’ve had three or four in the last few weeks. It’s a very dangerous road. When we try to get out, you can’t see what is coming.

“We’ve always said further back there should be a sign, which says to motorists in so many yards there will be a 30mph limit.

“It’s very upsetting when the result of a crash is as it is today.”

Mrs Foster, 72, added: “I think it’s tragic. So many people are going to be affected by this. You go out and you don’t expect that to happen, do you? It’s very sad.”

Another Norwich Road resident, who did not wish to be named, said: “It doesn’t matter what age they are, it’s so sad. It’s a Friday and someone has lost a family member.”

Police said no further information relating to the deceased or the vehicles will be released until next of kin have been informed.

Fire crews from Sprowston, Wroxham and Earlham were called to the crash scene and cut one person out of a vehicle.

The road reopened shortly before 5.30pm.

The Horstead crash follows three crashes in the last week, which have killed five people.

King’s Lynn mum-of-four Sandi Greenacre, 51, a police community support officer, died following a crash on the A149 at Dersingham on Monday.

Joe and Rose Smith, both 87, from Hellesdon, died on the A140 at Hevingham in a crash between their Hyundai and a Renault at 8.25pm last Sunday. They were travelling home to Norwich after visiting their son in Aylsham for Mother’s Day.

And Billie-Jean Roberts, 48, and her daughter Annie Huizar, 19, who lived at Little Fransham, near Dereham, were killed when their white Ford Ka was involved in a crash with a Mercedes CLX at Hockering last Saturday and left the road.

Police last night appealed for any witnesses to the Horstead crash to contact the serious collision investigation team at Norfolk Constabulary on 101.
