THE daughter of a footballing legend successfully completed a 150 mile bike ride in memory of her sporting dad when she set off for London from Great Yarmouth.

Nikki Kitchener, daughter of Millwall centre back Barry Kitchener - who holds the record for the most appearances with The Lions - pedalled her way from the Pleasure Beach to the Den, the ground of the south east London club.

The fundraising Gorleston resident completed her mammoth ride within 24 hours, setting off at midday on Friday and arriving at the ground in time to watch Millwall take on Blackpool in their first game of the season yesterday (Saturday).

She was joined by five friends on the ride, which raised money and awareness for two cancer charities.

Supporters followed the group's efforts on social media site Twitter and Nikki kept them informed throughout the ride.

Today (Sunday) she tweeted: 'Thanks to everyone for their support leading up to and on the day, the reception we received was outstanding.'

Barry, who joined Millwall in 1965, died in March at the age of 64 after a short battle with oesophageal cancer.

Moved by the outpouring of love towards her late father and the lack of knowledge surrounding the fourth biggest cancer killer in the UK, Nikki felt she had to do something good in a time of mourning and tragedy and set up the Big Kitch Appeal - which raised money for Norfolk-based group The Big C and oesophageal cancer research charity OCHRE.

After arriving at the Den the London club unveiled the renamed west stand as the Barry Kitchener Stand, as a mark of respect and appreciation to the loyalty and dedication he showed to The Lions for almost 50 years, a move which has proved to be an 'exceptional source of pride' for his family.
