A charity dance went ahead just four days after its organiser died following a second battle with cancer.

Rodney Rose from North Walsham organised a similar event back in 2013 a year after he had surgery to remove a cancerous tumour from his oesophagus.

It raised £660 for the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital radiotherapy appeal as a thank you.

However, the cancer returned in his lymph nodes in June this year and he died just weeks later on September 1.

Despite his deteriorating condition, the 69-year-old father of two asked his wife Veronica to go ahead with the family's next planned dance at the Lighthouse Inn in Walcott on September 5.

Mrs Rose, 65, of Happisburgh Road, said the family would continue to organise the event in memory of Mr Rose and they had already booked everything for next year.

'Rodney said it had to go ahead.

'It was a very emotional and very successful evening,' she added.

'With other people there it encouraged us to get through the evening.'

Mrs Rose added it was only eight weeks between the day her husband spotted a lump on his neck to the day he died. 'I think it will help us by doing it. We will never forget him but it's something he did agree with and he wanted to do.'

Mrs Rose said more than 120 guests attended the latest charity dance.

The event included music from the 60s through to the 90s and live music from Norwich-based band Wypeout and Bobby Graham.

A total of £1,368 was raised on the night and a further £1,000 was match funded by Barclays bank.

Mr Rose also had surgery after a heart attack and the money was shared between the Norfolk Heart Trust and the oesophagogastric cancer fund, part of the NNUH charity.

A cheque was presented to Louise Cook, fundraising manager at NNUH, who said: 'I am very delighted the family continued to support the hospital. I am very appreciative of all the hard work that went into it. It was a successful and enjoyable evening for everybody.'

A funeral service for Mr Rose, who has daughters Catherine and Alison, will take place at Honing parish church on Monday September 21 at 2pm.

The family is welcoming Norwich City colours, and donations payable to The Big C Centre, through Murrell Cork Funerals, 57a, Mundesley Road, North Walsham.
