The original van used by Lance Corporal Jack Jones in the popular sitcom Dad’s Army has arrived at its new home in Thetford.

Bought by the Dad’s Army Museum at auction earlier this month, the butcher’s van will be kept at the Charles Burrell Museum where it will be on display from March.

The 1935 Ford Box van was bought at Bonhams for £63,100 with funds lent to the museum by Trevor and Mavis Jenkins and the Pearson family.

The museum will now embark on a fundraising initiative to pay the benefactors back.

Chairman Stuart Wright said: “We’re delighted we were able to bring it back to Thetford and look forward to putting it on display in the spring.

“We’re also very grateful for all the messages of support we’ve had.”

Mr Wright added that a grant of £10,000 from the Moving Thetford Forward board would go towards the cost of the van, and said that a mention the museum was given on the Chris Evans breakfast show on Radio 2 the day after the auction, had resulted in 5,000 hits on its website and £2,000 in donations.
