Thousands of people of working age in west Norfolk will receive less help towards their council tax bills from April 1.

As a result of changes to the council tax support scheme (formerly council tax benefit) around 3,500 of the borough council’s 13,500 claimants will either have to pay more council tax or will start paying council tax for the first time.

It will mean that council tax claimants will receive only 75pc of their weekly entitlement. For example – if people are entitled to £10 a week they will only receive £7.50 a week and will have to pay the remaining £2.50 a week.

Jo Stanton, West Norfolk council’s revenues and benefits manager, said: “The majority of people who claim council tax support will be unaffected. These include people of pension age and people with children under five or in receipt of disability premium or carer’s allowance who are protected from the changes.

“We have written to all our claimants advising them of the changes and guiding them to our online
calculator so that they could assess the impact of the changes on their bill.

“New bills are going out this week, and there should be no surprises as people will already be aware of the way the changes will affect them.”

If anyone is worried they may be unable to pay, they can contact the council to request increasing the number of instalments they pay from 10 to 12 to help spread the cost. The council also has a small hardship fund.

Anyone claiming council tax support can find out more about the changes by visiting www.west-norfolk.gov.uk
