The Cromer and District Foodbank swung into action this week when it opened the doors to its warehouse today (Wednesday).

It is one of the UK’s 250 foodbanks in association with the Trussell Trust and chairman of the Cromer branch, Tina Nicholas, said six months of work had already gone into the project.

“People have been very generous and understanding,” she said.

“We are there as an emergency stop gap and absolutely anyone can be affected.”

The project helps people in a crisis in north Norfolk by providing them with emergency food. People in need are issued vouchers by front line agencies, such as housing associations and the Citizens Advice Bureau, and are then given a three-day supply depending on the number of people in their household.

Mrs Nicholas added: “We plan to start slowly and then expand.”

The group are hoping to introduce more foodbanks across north Norfolk in areas such as Sheringham, North Walsham, Holt and Aylsham.

The warehouse at Cromer Methodist Church hall will be open on Thursdays from 1pm to 3pm for people to donate food items.

Volunteers will be at Cromer’s Morrisons store from 1pm for 45 tomorrow to explain how people can contribute.
