Football fans have been issued with a warning over their behaviour tonight, during and after England’s late night World Cup match against Italy.

Both the police and paramedics have put extra staff on duty to cope with what they fear may be a busy night, with so many fans planning to head into the city centre to enjoy the game in pubs and bars.

Relaxed licensing laws mean more bars than normal are expected to stay open to show the game, while police fear some fans will be drinking for longer periods than normal.

Police called on fans to be “respectful” to others and said extra officers trained in dealing with public order disturbances have been drafted in for the evening.

There will also be more ambulance staff on the road, as well as in the service’s control room.

While the police would not reveal the exact number of extra officers on duty, for operational reasons, a spokesman said: “Our main priority is that people enjoy the match safely and we would ask people not to over drink, to pre-plan journeys home and be respectful to others.”

Fans are also being urged to stay safe by the East of England Ambulance Service.

A spokesman said: “We have a command structure in place as part of the plans to deal with the additional pressures that certain matches in the World Cup may bring and will be increasing our staff on the road and in our control rooms on these

“Many of the games will be screened late in the evening so we would encourage people to take sensible precautions by going out later and taking care of themselves during the day by staying hydrated.”

The government has relaxed licensing laws to allow pubs to stay open late during some England matches.
