A member of the public in Buxton, near Aylsham, called police just after 11am yesterday (Sunday) to say that there was some sort of device underneath their car.

A 100-metre cordon was put in place around the vehicle, in Coltishall Road, and six homes were evacuated for public safety.

The people who were forced to leave their homes were taken to Buxton Village Hall.

Explosive Ordnance Disposal officers were called to the scene to determine the nature of the device and to make sure there is no danger to people in the village.

As of 7.45pm last night, they were still at the scene.

A spokesman for Norfolk police said: “There is no indication that the wider public were in any danger.

“This is being treated as an isolated incident, targeted at a particular individual and is not being believed to posed a threat any other member of public.”

Val Nichols, chairman of Buxton Village Hall, said: “I got a call and opened up the village hall. We had a family of four in there and another couple, plus a lady who came in wanting some water for her dog.

“I assume the other people who were evacuated from their homes went to their relatives. “We didn’t really know quite what was going on, but we made sure we had tea and coffee to give the people who came to the hall.”
