A new Community Speed Watch team has been trained up near Norwich.

Ten people from Horsford were trained to use a speed gun in an attempt to increase the number of roadside checks and raise the awareness of speeding issues. They join nearby St Faith’s and Hellesdon, who already have Speed Watch schemes up and running.

PC Andy Dye, beat manager, said: “One of the Hellesdon and Horsford Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) priorities is currently to support Community Speed Watch and tackle speeding across our parishes, so we are pleased that all three areas now have a scheme in place. Motorists who are caught speeding by the volunteers are sent warning letters from the police, advising them that they have been caught speeding and of the consequences. If significant numbers of drivers are caught speeding we will carry out checks ourselves where drivers can be issued with a fixed penalty notice or face a court appearance.

“Whilst the teams are now in place, we continue to appeal for more volunteers to make them sustainable and to reinforce the message that speeding is not acceptable in Hellesdon and Horsford.”

The SNT, along with colleagues from roads policing and the special constabulary, also carried out vehicle checks on the A140 Holt Road/Cromer Road on March 24 to tackle other road-related issues. Thirty vehicles were stopped – four drivers received fixed penalty notices, one vehicle was seized for having no insurance, and five drivers of foreign vehicles received words of advice around tax.
