Fewer drivers are flouting bus lane laws in Norwich – after a police crackdown was followed up with our own tally of rush-hour rat-runners.

Officers have put the improvement down to increased awareness among motorists, after more than 360 drivers were caught breaking the law on the cut-through from Grove Road to Brazengate, off Queens Road, on Monday and Wednesday morning last week.

A survey from the Norwich Evening News on Thursday then found that nearly 200 drivers were continuing to ignore the no entry signs during the two-hour restricted period.

Police this morning counted 37 motorists ignoring the no entry signs between 7.30am and 9.30am – but pledged to keep up their patrols until all drivers had got the message.

People living in the area had asked for extra patrols after a number of crashes, including one where a cyclist suffered a fractured skull and another where a cyclist broke their leg.

Roads policing officer PC Andy Lincoln said: “It is encouraging to see fewer motorists using the route as a short-cut in the mornings and it’s fair to say our patrols and coverage in the media is helping to raise awareness among drivers.

“These restrictions are in place for a reason and clearly the message hasn’t got through to everyone so we will continue with patrols.”

Last week’s police patrols found 174 breaking the law on February 10 and a further 191 two days later. Our own patrol then counted 188 doing the same on February 13.

Police will write to each of the 365 drivers with a notice of intended prosecution, which could mean a £100 fine and three points on their licence.

The bus lane operates from Monday to Friday between 7.30am and 9.30am, with only buses and taxis allowed to enter the road and on to Brazengate, near Sainsbury’s. The restrictions also apply to vehicles on Victoria Street, with no left turn onto Brazengate between those times.
