The man who captured on camera an elderly woman driving on the wrong side of the A47 near Norwich has told of his surprise at what he saw – and his relief that no one was seriously hurt.
Tony Bennett was heading east on the A47 when, near to the Broadland Business Park, he and his wife were confronted by a vehicle heading towards him in the next lane of the dual carriageway.
Mr Bennett, 57, a hospital radiographer from Methwold, who captured the moment on his dashcam and, along with other motorists, flashed his lights to try to warn the oncoming driver, said: “We were on our way over to the Norfolk Broads and it was quite a surprise when we saw someone heading towards us. I think we were very fortunate we were already in the left hand lane and as we were on a pretty long straight could see her from along way away and managed to slow down.
“But if she was going round a bend and someone was coming the other way she would have been very difficult to avoid.”
The couple called the police, who received 65 calls about the woman driving westwards on the eastbound carriageway of the A47 with Mr Bennett offering to provide police with the footage he captured on the dashcam, which he has had for about nine months.
The footage was not needed in the end as the woman, who has not been named, surrendered her driving licence after she was pulled over by police near to the Broadland Business Park at about 11.35am on Saturday.
No one was hurt as a result of the incident, and it was not until after he got home that Mr Bennett realised how serious it could have been.
He said: “Afterwards when you think about what could have happened it hits you.”
Similar incidents have led to calls for a tightening up of licensing for older people on the roads.
In 2007, the then Norfolk coroner William Armstrong called on the government to consider introducing an upper age limit for drivers after the death of 92-year-old Norwich motorist George Pyman.
