Would-be-thieves put their lives at risk when they attempted to steal overhead copper cables in a north Norfolk village.

The incident left 28 properties without power for several hours.

It happened at Scarborough Road, Great Walsingham, near Fakenham shortly before 3am today.

A spokesman for UK Power Networks said: “UK Power Networks takes incidents like this very seriously.

“Thieves risk serious injury and death by tampering with our equipment.

“We will press for the prosecution of anyone caught tampering with our network.”

Norfolk Police are investigating the incident but could not say how those involved were able to reach the overhead cable.

They were unable to take any copper from the scene.

UK Power Networks engineers attended at around 3.15am.

For safety reasons, they isolated power supplies to 28 properties at 5.05am.

Experts visited each property to check internal wiring and equipment before electricity supplies were restored to all properties by just before 3pm.

Engineers remained in the area helping check appliances for customers.

The UK Power Networks spokesman said: “Our engineers had to replace about 400m of overhead line that was cut down and replaced it with a more robust version, able to withstand greater weather problems as well as more difficult to steal or damage.”

Road closures were put in place while the work was carried out.

While metal thefts have been previously been reported to be on the rise in Norfolk, a Norfolk Police spokesman said they have not dealt with a large amount of such incidents in the county in recent months.

Norfolk Police would like to hear from anybody who has any information about this crime.
