Officers were called to an address in Quarry Road shortly before 6am on Thursday following concerns for the safety and welfare of a man inside who was reportedly threatening to self harm.

Specially trained officers, including police negotiators and medical advisors, remained at the scene and were in dialogue with the man throughout the course of the day.

At about 8pm officers forced entry to the property and a man in his 40s was found injured inside.

Police and paramedics made attempts to resuscitate the man who was pronounced dead at the scene. No one else was inside the property.

Investigations into circumstances surrounding the incident continue and a seal remains in place on the property.

The matter will be referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), as is standard procedure.
