Officers cordoned off a playground last night after reports of an explosion.

Two home-made devices were said to have been put in grassland off Churchman Road, off Salhouse Road, Norwich.

One witness said one was a can and another a bottle, although only one of the devices had gone off.

He said he heard a bang and called the police shortly before 8pm.

He said: “I had my home cinema system on and I heard it over that. I checked outside and saw some smoke over the trees.”

A police spokeswoman said: “Officers from Norfolk Constabulary were called at approximately 8pm on Wednesday night to a playground in Heartsease following reports of a suspicious object.

“The immediate area around the object was sealed off whilst specially trained officers made initial investigations.

“The object was assessed as safe and did not pose any threat to the local community. It was been taken away for forensic examination.”
