A Norfolk police spokesman said: “Police received a report that Freethorpe Post Office had been broken into and the till stolen at around 10.50pm last night (Tuesday).”

It is the second time in less than five months the shop, near Acle, has been victim of a “smash and grab”.

Following the attack, a dark car was seen leaving the scene and a search of the area began. Just before midnight, police were called to a petrol station on Plumstead Road, Heartsease, where a black Vauxhall Vectra had driven off without paying.

It was spotted on St Crispin’s Road, near Norwich city centre, at around 12.01am and when it failed to stop for officers it made off at speed, towards Taverham.

At around 12.10am the car rammed a police car outside Hellesdon Hospital, on Drayton High Road, and the pursuit continued until 12.15am when the car was eventually stopped at the junction of Reepham Road and School Road, Drayton.

Two men, aged 28 and 30 and from Norwich, have been arrested on suspicion of burglary, making off without payment and failing to stop for an officer and are in custody at Wymondham Police Investigation Centre awaiting questioning.
