A man will appear in court tomorrow morning charged with an attempted murder and rape dating more than 17 years.
Police last night charged the man with the offences, which took place in the summer of 1996 in Trowse, following an unsolved case review.
Peter John Carroll, 55, and from Aylesbury, in Buckinghamshire, has been charged by officers from the Joint Norfolk and Suffolk Major Investigation Team.
He has been remanded in custody and was due to appear at Norwich Magistrates’ Court this morning. However, police have now said he will appear tomorrow morning instead.
The two charges relate to an incident involving a 20-year-old woman in the White Horse Lane area of Trowse, near Norwich, on July 20, 1996.
The road runs alongside the village’s common and extends out of the village to meet Stoke Road.
Villagers were shocked and surprised at the news.
Andy Coleman, landlord of the White Horse, which overlooks the road where the alleged attack took place, said: “We’ve been here much longer than that, but I don’t remember anything like that from the time.”
A woman at the Crown Point Tavern said she had no recollection either, adding: “It’s quite a shock to hear.”
