A man has been charged in connection with the robbery of a pensioner in a Lowestoft churchyard.

A 44-year-old man was last night (Friday) charged by police in connection with the robbery of an 88-year-old man in St Margaret’s Churchyard.

The incident happened at about 5.10pm on Thursday when the pensioner was tending to his family’s graves when he was hit across the back of the head with a glass bottle and had his wallet stolen.

A police spokesman said: “Patrick Bird, of Newcome Court in Oulton, has been charged with one count of robbery and also one count of theft from a shop, in relation to an incident occurring on the same day in which a bottle of wine was stolen from a convenience store.”

Bird was remanded in police custody and will appear at South East Suffolk Magistrates’ Court today (Saturday, August 2).
