Runaway convict Andrew Farndon, who escaped from a hospital in Suffolk, was captured in Scotland, according to police who also have arrested a further four people.
Andrew Farndon, 26, took a taxi to West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds with two officers from HMP Highpoint on Wednesday night after he was injured in the prison.
It is believed he had hurt himself with a knife.
But at about 6.50pm outside the A&E department, the prison officers were threatened by a man with a gun who pointed his weapon at the female guard’s head and insisted Farndon be freed.
The pair then ran off across the car park, sparking a nationwide manhunt.
Suffolk Police have now revealed that Farndon was captured in Ayrshire on Friday evening, following a joint investigation with Stathclyde Police, and he remains in police custody.
A police spokesman said: “As a result of this joint investigation, a further four people, three men aged 16, 33, 43 and a woman, aged 44, have been arrested and are presently detained in police custody for allegedly attempting to pervert the ends of justice.
“It is anticipated that all four will appear at Ayr Sheriff Court on Monday, January 30, 2012.”
Investigations are continuing into the death of a 13-year-old at a property in the Norwich area.
