A 17-year-old youth was remanded in custody after appearing in court this morning charged with grievous bodily harm with intent after an incident at the Langley School in Loddon.

The teenage male, who cannot be named for legal reasons, spoke through an interpreter and made no application for bail.

He will be held in custody until tomorrow, when he will appear at Great Yarmouth Magistrates - sitting as a youth court.

The 17-year-old was arrested following an incident which took place overnight between Sunday and Monday at the Langley Park-based independent day and boarding school.

Ryan Creek, representing the defendant, said no application for bail would be made as the defendant had nowhere to stay, and no support network in this country.

Yesterday, the victim remained at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and his condition is described as “stable” at this time.

A spokesman for the East of England Ambulance Service Trust (EEAST) said they were called at just before 10.30pm on Sunday with an ambulance on scene at just after 10.45pm.

He confirmed two teenagers were taken to hospital, one with a serious injury to his back, the other less serious to his arm. Neither was thought to be life-threatening.

Dominic Findlay, headmaster of the school yesterday said he could not comment on the incident at this stage as it was part of a police investigation.

Langley School, a co-educational day and boarding school, takes boys and girls aged between 10 and 16 in its senior school and from 16 to 18 in its sixth form.

According to the latest inspection by the Independent Schools Inspectorate there are 729 pupils at the school (429 boys; 300 girls) with 648 day pupils and 81 boarders.

Current term fees for day pupils at the school are £3,985, £8,100 for boarders and £6,755 for weekly boarders, which covers up to five nights a week.

Its mission statement states “Langley School exists to provide a first-class, all-round education within a friendly, inclusive and supportive community.”
