A black and white picture dating back to the 1890s that was unearthed at a church has sparked a search for information into its subjects’ identities,

The mysterious snap was found at Brandon Baptist Church, and appears to show the church’s choir from 1895.

The 38 people in shot are kitted out in their Sunday best, with a shield in front of them brandishing the choir’s name, the name of “E.J Palmer, Conductor”, and dated 1895.

Men line the back of the picture, with 20 women in front sitting and standing, but it is the identities of the eight young boys sat on the floor which has sparked most interest, with links to the First World War a possibility.

Graham Miles, from Brandon, found the photo in a cupboard at the church, and is putting out an appeal for information.

“There are people in Brandon whose families go back a long way and we thought they might be able to identify the people in the picture.

“When you look at the date, and think those boys must be about 10-years-old, there’s a very good chance they could have been involved in the First World War.

“It’s a fascinating picture but we don’t really know any more about it other than that it’s the church’s choir,” he said.

The location that the picture was taken is also unknown, with Mr Miles speculating that it could be one of the larger houses in the town.

The church, in High Street, was founded in 1854 and used to meet in the building above the current site of the St Nicholas Hospice Care Shop.

It was founded as an offshoot of Barton Mills Baptist Church.
