Thieves stole safety barriers from a building site over the weekend.

Up to 30 yellow/orange ‘Chapter 8’ barriers, worth about £1,000, were stolen from Yaxham Road, Dereham, between 3.30pm on Friday and 5pm on Sunday. The barriers were close to where work is currently being carried out to build a new McDonald’s drive-through, a Marston’s pub and a 51-bed hotel at the redundant former Cemex site.

The barriers are described as “essential” to protecting members of the public walking along the adjacent path from deep trenches that have been dug on the site.

A Norfolk police spokesman said: “It is believed that anyone removing these barriers would have required a van and would not have been able to steal them discreetly, particularly as the location is a busy road and near to a 24-hour convenience store.”

Witnesses should call PCSO Andrew Barton at Dereham police station on 101.
