Thetford couple jailed for attack which left elderly woman “traumatised”
A couple who attacked and robbed an elderly woman in Thetford leaving her “traumatised” have been jailed for a total of seven years.
Sergejs Mihailovs and Jana Mihailova followed the 85-year-old victim as she walked home from the town centre on Saturday, July 5.
While walking out of the underpass on Croxton Road at about 2.40pm, Mihailovs grabbed the victim by the throat while Mihailova wrestled with the woman, snatching her handbag containing cash and personal items.
The victim fell to the floor during the struggle, suffering two dislocated fingers as well as cuts.
Police were called and units attended the area within minutes. A search was carried out resulting in a man and a woman being arrested and taken to Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre for questioning and later charged.
Mihailovs, 42, and Mihailova, 19, and of no fixed abode, both pleaded guilty to robbery and were sentenced at Norwich Crown Court yesterday (Monday, August 18) to four and three years’ imprisonment respectively.
They were also ordered to pay victim surcharge of £120.
Investigating officer Detective Constable Mark Barron, from Thetford CID, welcomed the sentences.
He said: “The swift response from uniformed officers that day meant the suspects were stopped and arrested close to the scene, within minutes of police being called.
“When detained the suspects were found in possession of some of the stolen property, evidence which ultimately helped secure these convictions.
“This was a particularly nasty attack which left the elderly victim traumatised with some injuries to her fingers, caused as a result of the struggle.
“The offenders targeted, stalked, and attacked the victim without any thought to her age or frail condition and it’s pleasing to see them behind bars where they belong.”
