Several people have died after a collision between two lorries and a minibus on the M1 today.
Officers were called to a report of a three vehicle collision on the southbound carriageway between junctions 15 and 14, shortly before 3.15am.
The collision involved two lorries and a minibus, which were travelling in the same direction. It’s believed the minibus had travelled from the Nottingham area.
Eight people have died and four people have been taken to hospital following the collision on the M1 near Newport Pagnell, Thames Valley Police have said.
They have confirmed all of the deceased were travelling in the minibus. The four taken to hospital were also travelling in the minibus of whom one is a child.
Two men have been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. They are both currently in custody.
Motorists have been advised to avoid the area while the emergency services work at the scene. The southbound carriageway between J15 and J14 was closed for several hours but has now reopened.
The southbound M1 traffic was diverted along the A14 and M11, causing those routes to be significantly busier than usual this morning.
Chief Inspector Henry Parsons from the Joint Operations Unit for Roads Policing, said: “Our thoughts are very much with the families of those involved in this morning’s collision, and we are currently working to locate and inform their next of kin.
“I would continue appeal to anyone who witnessed the collision and has not yet spoken to officers to please contact us. Anyone who has any information which could assist the investigation should call the 24-hour Thames Valley Police enquiry centre on 101 quoting URN 203 of 26/8.”
