A man called at the home of a woman in her 80s on Parkside Court during the afternoon of December 6, offering items for sale.

The woman invited him in as she didn’t want to let the heat out of her house, and agreed to buy goods from him.

She didn’t have any money, so the man went to a cashpoint on Market Hill and withdrew £100 to cover the goods with a receipt.

He then also withdrew more money without the woman’s permission or knowledge.

The man is described as white, of large, stocky build, around 6ft and in his late 20s. He claimed to be from Nottingham.

Detective Constable Colin Aris from Norfolk Police’s Operation RADAR team, said: “This door to door salesman has deliberately targeted an elderly, vulnerable person, firstly offering her goods at an extremely overinflated price, and then taking advantage of her good nature by persuading her to hand over her bank card and PIN.

“We often receive reports of cold callers offering poor quality goods at high prices, particularly at this time of year, but this man has gone one step further and stolen from his customer.”

Police have carried out house to house inquiries in the area and the man is known to have called at neighbouring homes.

DC Aris added: “Several other residents had a visit from this man, most turned him away but at least one gave him some money without buying anything because he felt sorry for him.

“We would always recommend you never buy goods or services from someone cold calling at your door, as most of these people are acting illegally as they do not possess valid Peddlers Licences.

“Our advice is to turn them away, advising the police will be called if they do not leave. Tell police about suspicious people in your area by calling 101 or 999 if a crime is in progress, and keep an eye out for elderly and vulnerable friends, relatives and neighbours.”

Anyone with information about the door to door salesman in Diss should contact DC Aris on 101, or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
