At least a dozen officers were called to the northern end of Silver Road today (Thursday) at around 2.40pm.

The road was later cordoned off from the Prince of Denmark pub to the Crusty Corner bakery, with police standing at each end diverting traffic throughout the rush hour.

Officers were seen going in and out of a house on the eastern side of the thoroughfare, between Ladysmith Road and Sprowston Road. The response team included firearms unit police with large guns and combat helmets, as well as the dog squad.

No arrests were made and nobody was harmed.

A handful of residents were gathered at either end of the cordoned-off area, unable to return to their houses. One resident, who had been waiting to get home for more than an hour, said: 'It's understandable, they have got to do their job. It's usually a quiet road.'

Meanwhile, residents took to social media to share what they had seen.

Becky Colley commented on Facebook: 'My husband had to be escorted by a police lady through the road block to collect his van.'

Percy Varco posted on Twitter: 'Police operation, Silver Road closed off, many cops. Think some are armed.'

Hannah Winter comment on Twitter the incident had caused 'traffic gridlock' in the area.

A police spokesman said the cordon was necessary while police conducted a search of one of the houses in the road.

However, the incident was resolved peacefully, and the cordon was lifted at around 6.45pm.

A statement from the police said: 'Armed officers were called out...following an incident in Norwich.

'It's after police were called shortly after 2.40pm to concerns for man at a property in Silver Road in the city.

'Armed officers were dispatched to the area and a cordon was put in place whilst police searched a property. As a result, nothing was seized and no arrests were made. The seal has now been lifted.

'Police would like to reassure the local community there were no indications of a wider risk to the public.'
