You don't exactly have to break in to Diss station to get access to the ticket machines - they are easily accessible and freely available right round the clock, and it is easy to work on them undisturbed in the stillness of the night. I am sure the cost of replacing them, beefing up the security, and the value of the inconvenience to travellers, greatly exceed the modest savings achieved by closing the ticket office or by letting people buy their tickets on the train without a surcharge.
