Shoppers are being urged to be vigilant after two separate purse thefts from handbags in the town centre.

Both incidents took place between 11am-noon on Church Street yesterday and the purses contained cash and bank cards.

Keep your bag closed and close to you at all times, if possible with the opening towards your body.

Police have issued the following advice:

■Close your purse and put it away before you leave the till.

■Try not to overload yourself with bags and coats.

■Avoid carrying your purse or wallet in a back trouser pocket.

■Keep cash secure and out of sight.

■Do not leave your handbag, push chair or shopping trolley unattended for any length of time.

■Do not write down your PIN and keep it in your wallet/ purse/ handbag. If you cannot remember your PIN, you can change it at your bank to a number which is easier to remember.

Anyone with information should contact Cromer police station on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

  • I notice or have noticed that in and around Cromer there seems to be a higher crime rate especially at this time of year, when the caravans are hired out. It seems to calm down after the season nears it's end ie. Sept.Oct. time. Every year we have had raids on garden sheds, the local school was broken into, things go missing etc. I think people from outside Norfolk are involved. It would be so easy for them to hire a caravan on and off during the holiday period, nip back home, goods out of sight no trace then back down again for the next time.
