The man went into the shop in Crab Lane around 10.55am and spoke to the person behind the counter, asking for two packs of cigarettes and a bottle of vodka.

He then asked for another item from behind the counter and as the shopkeeper turned around he grabbed the cigarettes and vodka and fled.

The thief was pursued and detained by the shopkeeper with the help of another and the vodka recovered, but the offender then left.

He is described as white, of medium build, with short straight blond hair, wearing black trousers, a grey top and white trainers.

Police are asking anyone who saw the thief, or anyone with information about who he is, to call PC Nick Kitson on 101.
