A teenage boy was given a warning after shooting targets with a weapon in his back garden.

Officers were called to Postle Mews in the Mile Cross area of Norwich at around 3.50pm on Tuesday, November 7.

A Norfolk Police spokesman said: 'We were called to reports of a male with an air rifle in Postle Mews, Norwich. Officers attended and located the male, who was shooting targets in his garden with the back gate open, which was in full view of members of the public. The male was given words of advice by officers.'

She added the officers were not from the firearms department.

The 999 call was made by former police officer Stuart Ingram, 41, from Ditchingham, who was driving past the street.

Mr Ingram, who now for a housing association, said he saw a man holding what he believed was a rifle walking from Vale Green to Postle Mews.

Mr Ingram said: 'I didn't register what I saw until about 20 seconds later. I realised the gravity of what I saw. There were mothers and children walking across the other side of the road. I rang the police. About seven officers arrived within five minutes.'

Mr Ingram witnessed the man going into the garden of a bungalow on Postle Mews.

The housing officer added the road was not sealed off by police after they arrived and confirmed no-one was injured or appeared to notice the weapon.

He described the incident as 'bizarre'.
