Police have issued a warning after two men attempted to burgle an elderly woman’s coastal home.

The pair attempted to distract the homeowner at her Cross Street property in Salthouse, twice on Thursday May 15 at about 1.20pm, but left her home empty handed.

During the first attempt the two men attempted to persuade the woman to go to the pub with one of them whilst the other one checked her garden. They also offered her gardening services.

When the victim declined, the offenders left the property and walked up and down the street.

After calling at the house a second time, one man used the toilet while the other tried to call her outside to check the garage, which she refused.

They made further attempts to gain her trust before leaving the property empty handed, in the direction of Coast Road.

The first suspect was in his mid-40s, bald and wearing a stripy t-shirt and jeans.

The second man was in his late teens, approximately 6ft 4in tall and very thin.

Supt Stuart Gunn, district policing commander for north Norfolk and Broadland, said: “We are asking homeowners to remain vigilant regarding bogus house callers attempting to gain access to homes and gardens and to immediately report any suspicious behaviour to police by calling 999.

“Never be afraid or embarrassed to check a caller’s identity and always use a door chain, check through a window or use a door viewer. Remember that you do not have to open the door to anyone, and if in doubt, keep them out.”

Witnesses or anyone with information should contact DC Thomas Gibbs at Great Yarmouth CID on 101, or alternatively, contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
