Staff inside Dipples and Sons in Norwich city centre heard a thud as a man smashed the shop’s windows with a hammer, at about 12.30pm yesterday.

Manager Chris Ellis closed the outside grills, which trapped the man inside the entranceway. Police arrived about five minutes later and the man was detained.

Daniel Hutton, 29, from Lothian Street, Norwich, pleaded guilty to burglary and stealing a quantity of jewellery worth £3,655, when he appeared before the city magistrates’ court this morning.
