David Stephenson, 37, from Malvern Avenue, in Doncaster, was sentenced at Lincoln Crown Court today for the theft of the ring which was on sale for £99,500 at Francis Wain jewellers, in Norfolk Street.

The ring’s retail price was £99,500 and was a Picchiotti white gold ring, with a large emerald cut diamond, surrounded by baguette diamonds. The theft happened in the afternoon of Tuesday, October 4, 2011.

On entering the shop, Stephenson looked at one particular cabinet. When the assistant finished serving her customer she then assisted Stephenson who looked at a couple of items, one being the ring. He then snatched the ring and ran out of the store.

He was given a prison sentence of five years and three months.

Investigating officer DC Richard Moden, from King’s Lynn, said: “This was an audacious and brazen theft from the jewellery store.

“Stephenson has also been convicted of similar thefts across the country so to see him jailed for over five years is of great satisfaction.”
