David Goddard, 52, of Charlton Road, Norwich, pleaded guilty to assault by beating when he appeared at Norwich Magistrates Court yesterday.

Fergus Harold, prosecuting, said Goddard was unhappy that the victim had recently split up with him when the offence occurred on December 9 this year.

The court heard Goddard saw the victim having a meal in the Glasshouse pub and approached her with a drink before “throwing the contents of the glass over her head”.

He told police in interview that he was drunk “out of his head” when the offence happened and regretted it.

Andrew Nickerson, for Goddard, said he made full admissions to the assault and entered an early guilty plea.

Goddard, who has previous convictions for assault and harassment against other victims, was sentenced to a 12 month conditional discharge.

He was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge and a contribution towards prosecution costs and subjected to a two year restraining order prohibiting him from contacting the victim.
