A man found by police on a church roof in Coltishall has been arrested on suspicion of theft offences.

Officers arrived at St John the Baptist Church, on Church Street, at about 9.30pm last night to reports of suspicious activity.

A 20-year-old man was found on the roof of the church and was arrested on suspicion of theft and being in possession of a knife.

A man in his 30s and a woman in her 20s were also arrested in connection with the theft.

All three were taken to Aylsham police investigation centre where they remain awaiting questioning.

The rector, Rev Christopher Engelsen said a church member heard noises coming from the roof while locking up, and phoned the police. He waited inside the church until the police arrived.

'We do not yet know the extent of the damage caused,' he said.

The church is famous for its reed thatch roof, the massive 15th century tower, 67ft high, and its clock that was fitted in 1877.
