A King’s Lynn company has been fined £10,000 and told to pay £784 costs over health and safety breaches.

Maintenance 24-7 Ltd, of King Street, admitted breaching the Health and Safety at Work Act and the Work at Height Regulations at Southampton magistrates court.

JPs heard roofer George Nicholls stood a ladder on top of his van to paint a third floor shop frontage. He was caught on camera by an environmental health officer.

Nicholls had been sub-contracted by Maintenance 24-7 Ltd for the paint job last April, because it didn’t have the right equipment.

But when he found his ladder wasn’t long enough, he parked his van on a double yellow line, obstructing a bus stop, and stuck it on the top.

The court was told this system was “fraught with risk”. Mr Nicholls or his labourer could have fallen, while passers-by could also have been struck by falling equipment or materials.

Nicholls, of Newdigate, Surrey, was fined a total of £4,000 and ordered to pay £666 in costs after admitting similar breaches to the company.

After the hearing, HSE Inspector Adam Wycherley said: “George Nicholls blatantly and recklessly risked harming himself and others, and he did so on behalf of Maintenance 24-7 Ltd, who had clear duties of their own to ensure the work at height was properly planned, managed and executed in a safe manner. The standards of both parties fell far below those required.”
