An investigation has been launched in Hunstanton following the death of a man found in the street with serious head injuries.

Police were called to Waveney Road at about 3.45am yesterday (Friday) and the man, believed to be a 41-year-old local resident, was taken to the King’s Lynn Queen Elizabeth Hospital in a critical condition.

He died yesterday afternoon and detectives were last night questioning a 37-year-old arrested in relation to the death, currently being treated as “unexplained.”

Officers are trying to establish how the man was hurt and a large stretch of the residential road, near Waveney Close, was cordoned off for most of yesterday while forensic examinations were carried out.

A team of forensic officers conducted a close search of the ground, including looking under cars, and several areas of the pavement were covered with grey plastic sheeting, possibly to protect evidence from the rain.

Residents have spoken of their shock over events, which have seen a usually quiet road transformed into a potential crime scene.

One neighbour, who did not want to be named, said it was all anyone could talk about.

“It’s a very odd thing to wake up to in the morning,” he said. “I’m shocked that something like this could happen here.

“It is very quiet down here as a rule. If it is who I think it is, I knew of him and his family.”

A post mortem examination is due to be carried out shortly.

Anyone with information is asked to call Norfolk Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
