Three men remain in hospital with serious injuries after a police pursuit, sparked by a burglary in Norwich, ended with a car crashing in Cambridgeshire.

Six men were taken to hospital after the chase, which began when police were called to reports of a burglary in Norwich at 9.25pm on Wednesday night.

The black Mercedes C200, which the burglary suspects were believed to have fled in, was pursued by police. But it crashed on the junction of the A1304 and A11 at Six Mile Bottom in Cambridgeshire at about 10.35pm.

Five men were arrested, with six people taken to hospital. One man remains in Addenbrooke's Hospital whilst two men remain at West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds. All three have what is being described as serious injuries.

Two of the men who remain in hospital have been de-arrested whilst they receive treatment. Three other men arrested at the scene have since been released under investigation whilst enquiries continue.

The high-speed pursuit spanned Norfolk and Suffolk and ended in Cambridgeshire.

Norfolk police were initially called to reports of a burglary at an address in Cavell Road in Lakenham, with suspects said to have driven off in a Mercedes C200.

Police later spotted the suspected vehicle on the A11 near Wymondham, heading southbound towards Suffolk, and Norfolk police officers pursued them.

A police helicopter and Suffolk police were also involved in the chase, which continued to Newmarket, westbound on the A14, with the car later heading the wrong way on the northbound carriageway of the A11.

It turned around on the A11, before the crash, after which Cambridgeshire firefighters had to free three of the men from the vehicle.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has started an investigation into the actions of members of Norfolk and Suffolk police.

A spokesman said: 'We are independently investigating the circumstances of a road traffic incident in Cambridgeshire on Wednesday evening.

'Officers and vehicles from Norfolk and Suffolk Police were involved in the incident following reports of a burglary in Norwich. The investigation follows a mandatory referral from Norfolk police.'
