Officers from the Local Immigration Team for Norfolk visited The Spice House, in The Street, shortly after 1.30pm last Thursday.

Checks revealed that two members of staff had no permission to be in the UK having entered the country illegally.

The Bangladeshi men - a 51-year-old who was found hiding behind a curtain in the upstairs staff accommodation and a 41-year-old - have been placed in UK Border Agency detention pending their deportation.

The Spice House now faces a potential fine of up to £20,000 unless it can prove the correct pre-employment checks were carried out.

Immigration Officer Kieran Bower said: “We are determined to crack down on those businesses that ignore our immigration laws.

“Any employer who takes on foreign nationals without permission to work in the UK is breaking the law.

“Our officers carry out regular raids targeting illegal workers and more are planned.”
