The Green Party announced today it would not put forward a candidate at Norfolk's police and crime commissioner.

Elections for the commissioner take place on November 15, and the winner will have powers to hire and fire and set budgets.

The party, which opposed introducing police commissioners, said it decided not to stand as the role should be taken by an independent candidate.

Adrian Ramsay, from the Green Party, said: 'We believe that the role would best be filled by an independent candidate with relevant experience rather than the police being closely associated with a political party.

'We are encouraging potential progressive independent candidates to come forward and we will be asking them about the key issues which we feel need addressing in the election.'

Today the Greens sent a list of questions to independent candidates and their answers will be looked at a meeting in Norwich on Thursday.
